Who Should Consider a Lip Augmentation?

If you have naturally thin lips and would like a fuller, more voluptuous pout, you may want to consider having lip fillers injected. In addition, if you enjoyed fuller lips during your youth and you notice that they are starting to thin, our Anti-Aging Experts can easily restore that lost volume with a lip filler. Another issue that we can address during the same lip injection procedure is the fine lines that surround the mouth.

Who Should Not Consider Having a Lip Augmentation?

Safety is of the utmost importance, for this reason, patients who should not consider a lip augmentation with Juvéderm® products include those who:

  • are allergic to the gram-positive bacterial proteins that are used to make the hyaluronic acid.
  • have allergies that lead to severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
  • are allergic to the numbing agent lidocaine (aka lignocaine and xylocaine).
  • are prone to bleeding.
  • have a bleeding disorder.

What Should I ask My Anti-Aging Expert During the Consultation at Skinjectables in Toronto?

Writing down questions to ask during your initial consultation is encouraged.

Some common questions include:

  • How many syringes of lip fillers will be necessary to attain the lip enhancement results you desire?
  • May I see some before-and-after photos of patients who had lip enhancement procedures with Juvéderm® and RHA?

If you choose to have lip enhancement injections with lip fillers, ask about pre-treatment recommendations.

What Does My Anti-Aging Specialist Need to Know About Me?

During your consultation, you need to be prepared to provide your Anti-Aging Expert with:

  • a list of your current medications (prescription and over-the-counter), vitamins and herbal supplements. If you take a multi-vitamin, please write down its name.
  • information related to any drug allergies or if you are allergic to latex, please let your Expert know
  • your medical history: This information should include surgical procedures, treatments, chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.).

Your Toronto Anti-Aging Expert also needs to know if you:

  • are pregnant, breastfeeding or attempting to become pregnant. Prior to your treatment, please inform your Anti-Aging Specialist if any of the aforementioned apply to you: The safety of dermal filler injections during pregnancy or while breast feeding has yet to be determined.
  • have an injury near the injection site. Unless the procedure is rescheduled until the injury heals, your chances of experiencing side effects increase.
  • are on medications for immunosuppressive therapy or if you take blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, aspirin, etc.). These medications can increase the likelihood of bleeding or bruising at the lip filler injection sites.
  • are taking Advil®, Aleve®, Excedrin® and Ibuprofen. These medications must be discontinued for at least a week prior to your lip injection procedure.
  • have a history of scarring or pigmentation disorders, please let your Anti-Aging Expert know. In addition, if you are planning to have a chemical peel or laser treatment after receiving your Toronto lip filler injections, you should ask your Expert how long you need to wait. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of inflammation following these kinds of treatments.
  • are experiencing any type of skin problem in the area(s) being treated with an RHA or Juvéderm® product. These problems may include cold sores, rashes, cysts or pimples, which can be located in or around the mouth. Lip filler injections should be postponed until the problem dissipates; otherwise, healing may be delayed or the skin problem being experienced might worsen.
  • are prone to facial herpes simplex (aka cold sores). Your Anti-Aging Expert can prescribe medication to prevent such an outbreak following treatment with lip fillers. Medications commonly used for this purpose include Valtrex, Acyclovir and Famvir.

How Long Does a Lip Injection Procedure Take?

A lip injection procedure with RHA or Juvéderm® is relatively short, lasting from 30 to 60 minutes.

Do Injections with Lip Fillers Hurt?

Since we use a topical anesthetic and all the dermal fillers we use contain lidocaine, most patients experience very little discomfort during the injection process.
